A Taste of The Capital Grille’s Generous Pour 2016

Summer sure is flying by quickly. There are less than three weeks left to enjoy The Capital Grille’s 8th annual Generous Pour wine event, which ends on Sunday, September 4th. The Generous Pour is an event which allows diners to enjoy a tasting of 7 wines for $28 per person with dinner. Considering the quality of the wine and how much you can sample, this is an exceptional deal.

We were invited to taste this year’s collection of wines at The Capital Grille in Stamford, CT. Having participated in past events, we knew what to expect – the server provides tasting notes and suggest pairings for each course, based on individual preferences. You can try all seven wines, or select which you’d like to sample. Afterwards, you can request another pour.

Here are the highlights of our dinner, including three of our favorite wines from the tasting.

Tasting Notes:  Distinctive, Robert Young Vineyard aromas of bright citrus and ripe stone fruit with flavors of nectarine, lemon, toasted almonds, and baking spice.

Food Pairing: The rich wine paired well with the Misty Point Oysters (Virginia)Lobster and Crab Cakes, and Jumbo Lump Crab Cocktail.

Clockwise: Jumbo Lump Crab, Lobster and Crab Cakes, and Oysters

Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz Blend

Tasting Notes: Not a shy wine, it presents savory aromas of smoke, paprika, and star anise, as well as flavors of plush fruits and dark chocolate.

Food Pairing: The full-bodied Shiraz Blend paired well with the Seared Tenderloin with Butter Poached Lobster Tails, one of my favorite main courses. I also recommend it with the Bone-In Kona Crusted Dry Aged NY Strip, another dish we normally order.

Stags’ Leap, The Leap Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Intense and finessed, with flavors of blackberry, cassis, and cranberry enhanced by notes of black pepper, cedar, coffee, and cocoa.

Food Pairing: This Cabernet was delicious with the tender Bone-in Filet Mignon with Garlic Shallot Butter and Lobster Mac and Cheese.

To complete our meal, we had enjoyed sips of our favorite wines of the evening and shared their Cheesecake served Brûlée Style with berries (strawberries, raspberries and blueberries). The Capital Grille makes their delicious cheesecake with ricotta cheese, giving it a light, creamy texture.

As always, we had a wonderful dining experience. The wine selection this year was better than the previous year. I just made another reservation to enjoy The Generous Pour during Stamford’s Summer Restaurant Week which runs from August 26 through September 4.
