Nicholas Roberts Fine Wines 2nd Annual Spring Palate Awakening in Darien

Last night, we attended Nicholas Roberts Fine Wines 2nd Annual Spring Palate Awakening held at Equinox Fitness in Darien. This was the second largest fundraising event for Turning Wine Into Water, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing clean water and sanitation facilities to those that lack them in underdeveloped nations.

Present at the event were 10 wine suppliers sampling a total of 70 wines. We tasted dozens of different grape varieties, from Verdejo (which I was told tastes like a Chablis when aged) to Sancerre to blends of Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris. It was great mingling with the representatives of each of the suppliers as well as the supporters in attendance.

Spring hors d’oeuvres

To clear our palettes, and I’d also say to savor with the wines were Spring hors d’oeuvres prepared by Executive Chef Robert Troilo of Nicholas Roberts Gourmet Bistro. My favorites were the Prosciutto Cups with pasta and green peas and the Mushroom Steamed Buns.

Nicholas Troilo, owner of Nicholas Roberts Fine Wine Merchants in Darien founded Turning Wine Into Water in 2005. Alarmed by the harsh realities faced by families and children in Africa who lack access to clean water, Nick decided to do something. He and his two sons/business partners, Robert and Peter, began contributing a portion of wine sales from special events and Wine of the Month memberships to the construction of a clean water well in Zambia.
