Take me to Hot Pot Heaven in Honolulu

Hot Pot is the latest craze in Hawaii. During my recent visit to the islands, I was surprised to see so many shabu shabu, or hot pot, restaurants open. The one place we dined at was Hot Pot Heaven, located in the McCully Shopping Center in Honolulu. Hot Pot Heaven recently won a 2011 Critic’s Choice Ilima Award.

Here are the things you need to do to get that hot pot started:

  1. Select your broth – there’s a variety of broths from the basic chicken broth ($5.99) to the spicy Thai broth ($8.99). Torn between two? No problem – you can get both – it’ll come in one pot with a divider (see right).
  2. Select your protein – thinly sliced beef, pork, you name it – they’ll bring a plate of it for you to cook in the hot pot.
  3. Select your veggies and other goodies to add to the broth. Towards the back of the restaurant is a fridge filled with plates of sliced tofu, noodles, bok choy, and other vegetables. Pay mind to the price of each plate – listed above the fridge.
  4. By the time you’re seated – the broth is already cooking on the electric stovetop on your table. So add all the ingredients to the pot, cook, and enjoy.

There’s a treat at the end of the meal – Bubbies mochi.

Tidbit: You can BYOB – so stop by the 7-Eleven at the other end of the complex and grab a Sapporo or two.
