North Shore, HI: Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp

#4 Spicy Garlic Shrimp

When you’re in the North Shore of Oahu, you’ve gotta stop by one of the many shrimp trucks and try one of their plate lunches. When you ask the locals for their vote on their favorite shrimp truck, most likely they’ll say Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck, which serves excellent shrimp. I had to give the other shrimp trucks a shot, so we headed to Fumi’s Kahuku Shrimp, which was named one of the best in the country, according to Maxim magazine’s Food & Drink Awards earlier this year.

You can spot Fumi’s truck on Kamehameha Highway near Turtle Bay Resort. Just look for the brightly colored truck with the big shrimp painted on it. There are picnic tables set up so you can order your meal and have a seat and enjoy it in the shade.

There are 11 items on the menu priced from $10 to $12, including Butter Garlic Shrimp, Spicy Garlic Shrimp, and Hot & Spicy Shrimp. The spicy garlic shrimp is good. It’s not overwhelmingly spicy; just right. You might have to get two plates because you only get about 6-8 pieces of shrimp, along with 2 scoops of rice, a small portion of greens, and a slice of pineapple.

Since most of the shrimp plates are peel and eat shrimp, don’t worry about getting messy. There’s a sink nearby so you can clean up.

So what’s better? Giovanni’s or Fumi’s? I say Giovanni’s – we drove there right after.
