Black Sesame Croissants at Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Breaking away from my usual spots for breakfast, I stopped at Stumptown Coffee Roasters at the Ace Hotel to get a cup of coffee and a croissant. The display case had all the stuff they usually carry – various croissants (butter, almond, and chocolate), doughnuts, and an assortment of cookies. But there was one thing that stood out, placed between the chocolate and almond croissants. It was a dark gray pastry with black sprinkled bits on top. I thought it was chocolate shavings for a moment, so I asked the cashier. He replied “That’s a black sesame croissant with cream cheese and strawberry jam.” Never had it before, so of course, I had to try it, along with a cup of joe. He rang up my order – a whopping $7.50 – $5 just for that croissant.

So off I went to my office, and thought, man this Black Sesame Croissant with Cream Cheese and TriStar Strawberry Jam better be worth it! And it was. The croissant was dense, and quite heavy, especially for breakfast. Good thing is it wasn’t loaded with cream cheese, just a thin layer; the jam was not too sweet; and the crunch of the sesame seeds made it a great combo.

After doing some research, these croissants are from Momofuku Milk Bar (Twitter: @Momomilkbar), which sell for $6. So I got a buck discount. Would I have this again? You betcha. It’s great with a cup of Stumptown Coffee; and a nice treat.
