Stamford: Volta Gelateria Creperia

Volta Gelateria Creperia recently opened next door to Bar Rosso on Spring Street. It’s owned by Capriccio Cafe’s Giovanni Gentile. Volta serves gelato, sorbetto, desserts, and crepes, which you can enjoy indoors, al fresco, or on-the-go.

Volta sells over a dozen flavors of gelato; all the flavors you’d expect to see at a gelateria, including Biscotto (Italian cookie), Gianduia (also known as gianduja, a chocolate/hazelnut flavor), and Stracciatella (Italian chocolate chip).

I was able to sample some flavors before deciding what to order. I opted for a flavor I haven’t tried before – Stracciatella. Yes, shame on me, for being such a gelato lover and not trying this flavor. Unfortunately, I was not impressed with their Stracciatella, so I decided to try three scoops of gelato, for $7 – hazelnut, coffee, and Nutella flavors. Eh. The best flavor was hazelnut, which tasted as how you’d expect. The others were okay, not as flavorful and rich as what I normally expect from gelato. It was not scorching hot outside, so the gelato should have been able to “hold up,” but it turned into a melted mess in my cup.

After all the hype, I was not impressed with the gelato. I’d rather stick to my store-bought favorite, Talenti Gelato, or getting gelato from Eataly, Il Laboratorio del Gelato, Whole Foods or from Sal’s Pizzeria & Gelateria in Mamaroneck.

I haven’t tried the food, but we’ll save that for another time. Maybe after time goes by, I’ll give the gelato another shot. After all, it was opening week.

Gelato – I ate 1/3 of it then I realized I forgot to take a pic
