Stamford: Tappo Restaurant

Tappo Restaurant is an Italian restaurant in Downtown Stamford that opened in Fall 2010. We stopped by for a late night snack because I had a craving for pizza and brew.

Tappo has a menu consisting of antipasti, salads, pasta and entrees; plus a separate menu for pizza. During lunch, they have panini and pizza. Tappo also has a decent wine list – bottles priced from $25 to over $100. Aside from a great wine list, Tappo offers a small selection of beer, including two from Italy: Birra Moretti and Peroni.

The pizza menu has a list 14 different pies ranging from $12 to $16, which the waiter says is enough for one person, but was good to share with another person, especially if you’re drinking beer. Since I intended to come here for pizza, I stuck with the battleplan and tried to narrow down the winner from their list. I was torn between a good ol’ Margherita (Basil, San Marzano tomatoes, and mozzarella), $12, and the Guancilae, Paptate e Olio Tartufato (Italian Cured Bacon with Fingerling Potatoes and Truffle Oil), $16.

We decided to get the Broccoli Rabe e Salsiccia Fatta in Casa (Homemade Sausage, Sauteed Broccoli Rabe and fresh Mozzarella), $14. I’m glad we ordered this pie. The sausage was delicious, and yes, it did taste homemade. It was very lean, and not a speckle of fat in sight. The broccoli rabe was cooked to perfection – didn’t taste bitter and went perfectly with the sausage. The mozzarella was also delicious, the only gripe was there wasn’t enough of it on the pizza. The crust was thin and slightly charred from cooking in their brick oven.

“A clean tasting pizza…with no oil,” is what I said to my dining mate. Yup, that’s what it tasted like. I was tempted to order another, but felt full after eating my half of the pie.

Overall, the dining experience at Tappo was great. Dining al fresco in the late evening, away from the crowd on the busy, and noisy, Main Street, with a great pizza and bottle of Peroni made my evening. I’ll be back to try their other pizza.
