NYC: Choza Taqueria

Choza Taqueria is a great spot for a quick bite, or if you can get a seat at one of their few tables – takeaway.

On the menu are tacos (3), burritos, bowls (served with rice and beans), and salads. Pick your protein: Carnitas (pork), Carne Asada (Steak), Pollo (Chicken), or Calabacin y Hongos (Vegetarian). There are also tamales, and other specialties available. Just look at their side blackboard near the entrance. Or if you want, grab some Elote (grilled corn).

The salad comes in a big plate – romaine lettuce, corn salsa, diced onions, cilantro, black beans, pickled carrots, and tomatoes. I picked tried the salad with carnitas, as per my server’s recommendation. The carnitas were tender and flavorful, especially since the meat is slowly simmered overnight with citrus, chilies, and seasonings. I didn’t care much for the dressing. It was an afterthought. I realized when I had 1/4 of my salad left that I forgot to use it. Tasted like Thousand Island dressing anyway.

Elote, grilled corn

The Elote was awesome. It’s essentially corn with a mayonnaise-base spread, chili powder, and white cheese. Don’t worry about the mess, it’s served on a stick. A small order (1/2 ear) is $1.84; large $3.67.

And to wash it all down, grab a bottle of Jarritos for $2.0 in any of these flavors: tamarind, mandarin, lime, grapefruit, guava, pineapple, hibiscus, apple.

I’ll be back for more.
