Brussels: Chez Leon

Finding a restaurant that serves good moules frites in Brussels was supposed to be an easy thing, at least I thought so. On my final night in Brussels, I gave in and tried Chez Leon for several reasons:

I was originally going to dine here on a Saturday night, but after scoping out the place, I saw signs on the restaurant windows mentioning Unlimited Mussels Night Sundays at 6pm. How does this deal work? Just order one of the 6 styles on the menu:
  • Moules spéciales (Celery, onion, butter), 21.90€
  • Moules méridionales (Tomatoes, sweet peppers, garlic) 23.60€
  • Moules à la crème (Mussels with cream) 26.30€
  • Moules poulette (White wine, cream, mushrooms, chive) 26.30€
  • Moules au vin blanc (Mussels with white wine) 23.60€
  • Moules au curry (Mussels with curry) 26.30€

Once you finish your pot, the server will pass by and ask “More? Another one?” Then you give him the signal.

Each order comes with frites, which aren’t the greatest. I chose the Moules au vin blanc – seemed like the safest choice that I could get pots full of. The mussels were good; the broth was flavorful – you can really taste the celery in it. I actually wound up ordering 4 pots of it. My waiter was surprised at how much I could eat (I surprised myself too).

A tip to consuming as much as I did: skip the bread and frites and don’t go crazy with the beer, as the carbs will fill you up.

My husband ordered Spaghetti bolognaise, and that was disappointing – not much meat in the sauce, and a bland tasting sauce at that.
Spaghetti bolognaise, 9.40€

Well, at least I got my money’s worth that night. And of all the moules frites I’ve eaten in Brussels, this was the best.
