NYC: The Hurricane Club

The Hurricane Club (Twitter handle: @HurricaneClubNY) is a Polynesian bar/restaurant in the Flatiron/Gramercy section of NYC.

As you push your way through the white revolving doors, you are greeted with a grand entrance (a nice escape from the busy Park Avenue). Go through the next set of wooden doors and you are transported to another world. The decor is gorgeous. Beautiful woodwork. Mirrored columns. Fabulous tables. White curtained windows. Massive mirrors from Restoration Hardware. Beautiful bar area. Just gorgeous.

The staff are decked out in white blazers and are pleasant to speak to and ready to serve you.

I intended to have lunch off their delicious selections on their Restaurant Week menu, but the regular menu looked so enticing.

Peking Duck Sandwich with fries, $18
‘Lean’ Peking Duck breast, skin-on in a double decker sandwich served on toasted white bread. My first bite had me thinking of a bahn mi (Vietnamese sandwich) because of the hoisin mayo, cucumber slices and cilantro. The skin was lightly crisp and didn’t have much fat underneath it. Overall I was very impressed with the quality of the meat: tender, flavorful, and succulent. I highly recommend this dish. I didn’t feel guilty eating the sandwich – skin and all. The last time I ate the skin of Peking Duck was when i had dinner at Buddakan. I won’t share their cooking method. A little secret of mine.

Oh, did I mention it comes with fries? Perfectly cooked fries – crispy on the outside and not greasy – you Joe it was fried at the right temperature. It’s a shame I decided to dip my last 3 fries into the dipping sauce, which I thought was plain ketchup. It was actually a spicy ketchup. Perhaps a blend of srichacha and ketchup with the right amount of kick.

Tri-Tip Steak with Jungle Salad, $18
Tender chunks of steak served on skewers with two dipping sauces: horseradish and ponzu. The jungle salad is a perfect name for it: lettuce, shredded cabbage, bits of fried shrimp chips and a light dressing. Looked like a jungle, but delicious.

There is also a different scene at night. We’ll save that for another review.
