Food and Social Media

Time to take a break from restaurant reviews, recipes, and food news – it’s time to share some insights on social media and food. Seems like everyone is using some form of social media – your friends, family, and your favorite (or not) brands. Here are a few sites/apps to try out to learn more

foursquare: Checking in to food establishments can not only earn you mayorships, but also freebies and discounts. Not to mention tips. Zagat is on foursquare and they provide food-related tips at various restaurants across the U.S. like Matsugen and In-N-Out Burger.

If you have a smartphone, you can also get tips from location-based apps like Gowalla or even Yelp to find out what restaurants to check out. Ah, decisions, decisions…see what other foodies have to say. These apps make it easy to get recommendations.

Scvngr: Another location-based application where you can check in to spots. There’s also some perks: Buffalo Wild Wings is a major brand that rewards people for their Scvngr activities. First it was deals like $5 off orders of $25 or more, and now it’s full blown contests to earn prizes. See their latest Challenge on their website.

Foodspotting: Share photos of your food. Get ideas of what’s good to chow down on in your area. Show off your expert badges.

Groupon, Living Social, and other group-buying sites: Take advantage of special deals at your favorite restaurants. Registration is free, so it’s well worth it. But remember, once you buy the deal, don’t forget to use it.

Twitter: Food trucks use it. Restaurants use it. Follow your favorite food establishments and find special deals, or even contests. Or in the case of food trucks, find out where they’re serving up meals.

Facebook: Is there much to say here? ‘Like’ your favorite brand pages and find out the latest scoop on promotions, events, or score a discount.

These are just a few social media sites. What sites are you using? Have you found any special deals? Do you share the deals you find?
