Recipe: Loco Moco

Aloha. This past Friday, Travel Channel aired a rerun of “Man Vs Food” Hawaii (Recap here). The episode brought back memories of my last 2 trips to Hawaii and the grinds (local Hawaiian food). One of my favorite dishes is the Loco Moco plate lunch. Loco Moco is basically an oh-so-good dish made up of hamburger patties, eggs and rice smothered with hot gravy. Here’s my recipe (nothing special):

Loco Moco for 2
Ingredients
  • 1/2 – 1/3 lb lean ground beef
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 jar of gravy (Heinz is the brand I use)
  • Rice
  • salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
  1. Heat a cast iron skillet (or pan) over Medium-High heat. While the pan is heating, shape the beef into 4 patties. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. Cook the patties to your liking, and set aside when done
  3. Cook the eggs (sunny side up, or over easy)
  4. Heat the gravy in a small saucepan
  5. Assemble this dish by putting a bed of cooked rice in a large bowl or plate. Top the rice with 2 hamburger patties, 2 fried eggs, and 1 to 2 ladles of hot gravy.
Alternate seasoning for hamburger patties – Add minced onion and garlic and a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce to the beef, then shape the patties.
