Restaurant Week Winter 2009: Kobe Club

Last Friday, I dined with a gal pal at Kobe Club located on 58th St between 5th and 6th Ave. I don’t think restaurant week has treated me well this season, as again, I felt it was another disappointment. Definitely I’d come back to this restaurant to impress a friend, but I’d recommend you trek across the street to either Quality Meats or Nobu 57.

For starters, I went with the Tuna Tartare, which had a beautiful presentation and a generous portion, but sadly did not taste fresh. My friend ordered the Slow Roasted Applewood Smoked Bacon & Black Truffles. Tasty but very salty and fatty. Order this at a steakhouse instead. My main course was the Kobe Chopped Sirloin Steak, an 8 oz. portion of wagyu (Japanese, Australian and American) with Vidalia onions, roasted bacon and truffle hollandaise. Think of it as a greasy burger served on a mini cast-iron skillet. I asked to be cooked medium, came back well-done. I ate it anyway, but I would not recommend this if you do plan on dining here. As a side dish, I had creamed spinach – delicious. The dessert was a Classic Creme Caramel.
