Restaurant Week Summer 2008: Aspen

It’s the first week of restaurant week and I decided to dine at Aspen, a semi-log cabin-ish restaurant in the Flatiron district. Conveniently located a few blocks away from my job I set early reservations. The lunch menu was a few dollars less than what the other Restaurant Week participants charged – $19.95, but you still get a bang for your buck.

The menu isn’t online, but here’s what they have, off the top of my head:

First Course
Soup of the Day
Goat Cheese Salad
Crabcakes

Main Course
Bison sliders
Fish tacos
Wild boar sausage

Dessert
Cupcakes
Ice cream/sherbert
Chocolate flan

Although the menu looks a tad bit strange with the wild proteins – you should go for it. Go for a little change. I opted for the crabcakes – two petite crabcakes served with watercress salad with thinly sliced peppers. Very good, and actually quite filling. Main course, I had the Bison sliders…had to get it especially since I wrote about sliders a couple days ago. Cooked medium, topped with caramelized onions and cheese on a brioche – divine! And to finish, the chocolate flan. I had to wait a while for it, but it was worth it. Not your average flan, but more like a cake.

Other things I’ve tasted (off my friend’s plate) – tuna tartar, nestled atop avocado – yum! And the Flatiron Steak sandwich – medium cooked slices of beef resting between slices of a toasted French baguette.

I’d definitely dine here again. Oh, did I mention the nice decor?
