Shopping & dumplings

My quest for the perfect luau dress is not fun. I’ve been going to every store in town – BCBG (sales are up to 50% off), Vivienne Tam (sales up to 30% off), Jill Sander (up to 75% off), Sisley (up to 50%), J.Crew, Banana Republic, Esprit, Intermix, A/X…you name it, I’ve been there. I did manage to pick up a cream dress at Anthropologie on Monday, but it isn’t suitable for my boyfriend’s company’s luau. The quest is on…

After a long afternoon of browsing, our trip ended at 23rd St and 6th Ave. I recall watching MTV some time ago and seeing a show on a dude who opened his first restaurant called Rickshaw Dumpling Bar (61 W 23rd St | Btwn 5th & 6th Ave). I finally found the place on the northeastern block and went in with my friend. We ordered pan fried Peking duck dumplings a hoisin vinaigrette salad, Shrimp dumplings in miso soup, and the chocolate dumplings (3 for $3). Okay…you must be wondering what a chocolate dumpling is…it is melted chocolate nestled in a mochi wrapper covered in sesame seeds. If you’re in Chelsea, you must stop here for a bite. But for better dumplings (and wontons), head south to Chinatown and eat at Wonton Garden on Mott Street (a block south of Little Italy).
